Open Safe Maryland 7/7/2020

COVID Exit Strategy, a non-partisan group of public health and crisis experts, has been tracking the progress states have made towards meeting the CDC recommended benchmarks states should reach before reopening their economies. As of 7/7, Maryland is meeting three of the CDC benchmarks, and is rated “Yellow” by COVID Exit Strategy due to the number of positive cases.

New analysis: Maryland receives “trending better” marks for COVID-19 containment measures

Baltimore -- With America as a whole continuing to struggle in containing the COVID-19 virus, Maryland PIRG released a new fact sheet today calling on the state to maintain all current restrictions, and consider implementing additional containment measures if COVID-19 cases begin to rise again.

U.S. PIRG Response to "Preparing for the Next Pandemic" White Paper

The U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions sought feedback on its white paper entitled, "Preparing for the Next Pandemic." U.S. PIRG's response is that the war against COVID-19 is far from over. As case rates and hospitalizations increase across several states, it’s imperative that Congress plugs the glaring holes in our medical supply chain now. 

CFPB complaint volume sets another record in May

As of today, consumer complaints to the CFPB set a third straight monthly record in May, with 35,093 complaints reported. Complaints about credit reporting lead by far, followed by debt collection, credit card and mortgage complaints. Job and income losses during the pandemic are hitting families hard.

I’ve been reading the CFPB’s mail. It’s okay, you can too. It’s public. Not surprisingly, the latest CFPB consumer complaints paint a grim picture of the pandemic’s effect on family finances. I ask: Why isn’t the CFPB doing more to help struggling consumers?

Mortgage servicers failed Americans during the last recession. And if early data from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is any indication, history may well be on its way to repeating.
