This coming Monday, June 1, will mark the third full month that bills are due since COVID-19 was declared a national state of emergency in March. Consumer, Banking Groups Applaud Bill to Exempt Economic Impact Payments from Garnishment

U.S. PIRG has joined leading consumer and banking organizations to applaud a bi-partisan Senate bill to broaden protections in the recent COVID-19 stimulus package. Under the CARES Act, Congress exempted Economic Impact Payments from offset for debts owed to federal and state agencies, except in the case of child support, but did not exempt them from court-ordered garnishment to pay creditors.

Consumer complaints to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) related to the coronavirus approached 50,000 on Tuesday. U.S. PIRG Education Fund has documented the actions taken by the FTC and 14 other federal agencies in response to coronavirus scams.

As jursidictions begin reopenning, let's follow advice from public health experts

Baltimore: On May 13, Governor Hogan announced plans to lift the statewide stay at home order and ease state restrictions on retail, manufacturing, houses of worship, and some personal services. His announcement gives individual jurisdictions power to make decisions regarding the timing of reopening locally.

Maryland PIRG Supports the "Roadmap to Recovery"

Baltimore:On April 24th, Governor Hogan released “Roadmap to Recovery,” his administration’s plan to safely ease state restrictions on business, education, and recreation implemented in response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The plan sets out 3 phases of reopening, with subphases within each phase, a set of 4 criteria for moving from one phase to the next, and the ability to move back if conditions worsen. 

Marylanders are eager to move beyond the shelter-in-place phase of the coronavirus response. But many are still anxious about safety. What are public health experts recommending?

Leading Consumer Groups Oppose Sweeping Corporate Immunity During COVID Crisis

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and its members have asked the Senate Majority Leader for sweeping immunity from lawsuits related to their failure to exercise proper care of workers and consumers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Leading consumer groups tell Congress to resist attempts by corporations that want to block our right to hold them accountable in court when they cut corners on COVID-19 safety and make us sick.
