Children's Environmental Health & Protection Advisory Council endorses green cleaning bill

Thanks to 2012 legislation promoting green cleaning practices in public schools, Maryland joined 10 other states in protecting both school kids and maintenance workers from toxic cleaners. Legislation introduced this session would have extended green cleaning to large childcare homes and childcare centers, while allowing for both practical and economic exemptions. Experts say younger children are most vulnerable to chemical exposure.

In March, Green Cleaning in Child Care Centers bill was endorsed by the Children’s Environmental Health and Protection Advisory Council – a group of pediatricians, State Delegates and Senators, environmental activists, and State Government Agencies housed under the Maryland Department of the Environment.

U.S. PIRG Senate Floor Floor Letter Opposing Bank Deregulation Bill S2155

This week, the Senate will consider S2155 on the floor. The bi-partisan bill led by Mike Crapo (ID) and Mark Warner (VA) rolls back big bank safety and soundness rules and exempts 85% of all banks from compliance with laws protecting consumers from mortgage fraud, racial discrimination and other consumer protections. In an effort to supposedly balance the bill's deregulatory bent, it includes a weak free credit freeze provision that preempts stronger state law efforts.

The Young Person's Guide to Health Insurance

For people in their late teens and twenties, getting health insurance can be a lot like a lottery . . .

If you’re lucky, your parents have a good plan that covers you while you are in school or your employer picks up the tab. If you’re not, your options shrink to two: a plan offering good coverage that you can’t afford, or a plan you can afford that covers little to nothing.

Starting this year, under the new health care law, young people will gain access to new, previously unavailable health insurance options. To make the most of those new choices, you need to learn the facts. This guide is designed to help you do that.

Tax and Budget Platform

Public money should be spent for the most effective pursuit of clear public benefits or to encourage beneficial behaviors undervalued by the market. Taxes should be fair, reliable, transparent, and guided by policy goals rather than political deals. Budgeting should similarly be open, accountable, and follow long-term planning.
