Maryland PIRG, along with our partners at Environment Maryland are proud to support comprehensive legisation to restrict the use of toxic pesticides in Baltimore City. Below is our testimony for today's remote hearing in the City Council's Health Committee.

Governor Hogan allowed a new law to go into effect without his signature which will restrict the use of chemical flame retardants in furniture, children’s products and mattresses.

Maryland shows it's possible to hold safe elections during COVID-19

Maryland held its special election for the 7th District Tuesday. Because of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the State Board of Elections and Governor Larry Hogan moved the election to vote by mail with limited in person voting. Maryland PIRG, along with allies, made various recommendations to the State Board of Elections and the governor on how best to run the elections.

Cleaning and disinfecting safely during the coronavirus outbreak

If you’re like me, you’re spending a lot more time cleaning while sheltering in place. My increased time at home cooking, working, and playing with my children makes a lot of mess! I am also cleaning more as a way to reduce the risk of exposure to COVID-19. I enjoy my cleaning routine; in a day full of zoom calls and wrangling small children, it’s nice to take a break to listen to the radio or music while I wipe down the counters or sweep the floor.

Maryland PIRG joins 85+ groups calling for nuclear safety

Maryland PIRG has joined NIRS (Nuclear Information and Resource Service) and 85+ other groups in signing a letter to the White House and Coronavirus Task Force asking them to strengthen safety and public health measures for nuclear power industry.

Maryland State Treasurer Nancy Kopp has added her name to a letter organized by Pennsylvania‘s Joe Torsella calling on ventilator manufacturers to release proprietary repair manuals, service keys, schematics and repair software.  

Montgomery County Gets it Right on Bags

This week, the Montgomery County Council was scheduled to vote on a proposal to suspend their single use bag fee. But after hearing from public health advocates, environmentalists and workers, they have instead pulled their proposal.

One thing that’s still (unfortunately) around? Phishing emails and scams. Scammers are taking advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic, launching a new wave of coronavirus-related tricks to cheat people out of their money and personal information.

COVID-19 consumer tips: Scams, utility bills and your stimulus check

Baltimore -- In the midst of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Maryland consumers are experiencing numerous public health and financial challenges, including virus-related scams, fake products promising cures and price gouging. To help address these concerns and more, Maryland PIRG Foundation is publishing new guides and tips each week to help consumers navigate this crisis.

A few days ago, the CDC released instructions for how to make your own facemasks to protect yourself and others during the COVID-19 crisis. With the extremely high prices of surgical masks due to price gouging in online marketplaces, purchasing a mask may not be an affordable option for all households. (Side note: if you’re worried about price gouging, check out some of our tips on how to avoid it and report it.)
